One of the most difficult things about being pregnant is finding pregnancy safe skin care. Once you are pregnant, you won’t be able to do all the things you have done pre-pregnancy nor will you be able to use all of the products you have used before. This is because some activities and products can be harmful to your unborn child.
However, this doesn’t mean that you won’t have medical issues arise during your pregnancy – especially with your skin. Below you will find a list of ingredients found in common skin care products that you will need to avoid during pregnancy.
What Skincare Products Are Safe During Pregnancy?
The first thing you need to watch for when looking at skin care products are Retinoids. While they haven’t been proven to be extremely harmful, they will cause cell division which is why they are popular in anti-aging moisturizers. They are also not recommended while pregnant or nursing. The following are ingredients containing retinoids that you should watch for on skin care product labels: Retinyl Linoleate, Differin, Tazorac, Avage, Retinyl Palmitate, Retinol, Retin-A, Retinoic Acid and Renova.
Best Pregnancy Safe Skin Care
The second most important ingredient you need to stay away from while you’re pregnant is one that is commonly found in acne medications. As you probably already know, acne can become a problem during pregnancy. However, this doesn’t mean you should go out and start taking acne medications or using acne creams as many of the active ingredients in these medications can be harmful to your baby. The most common ingredient found in these medications is Salicylic Acid.
Salicylic Acid can be found in skin cleansers, toners and other products used for facial cleansing and acne control. You should also be aware of Beta Hydeoxy Acid as this is a variation of Salicylic Acid. Therefore, you need to read the labels and stay away from anything including the following ingredients: BHA, Salicylic Acid or Beta Hydroxy Acid.
Now, while it seems that you may not be able to use any skin care products during pregnancy, there are actually some out there that contain safe ingredients. You just need to be patient and thorough in your research to find them. You can use skin care products that include have the following ingredients: Glycolic Acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or Lactic Acid as all of these are safe to use during pregnancy or while nursing.
