Head lice home remedies can offer help to anyone with head lice. Many people with school-age children know that head lice are becoming an epidemic, particularly as they are quickly becoming immune to known treatments. The female louse attaches herself to the hair using claws and lays her eggs at a rate of approximately eight eggs a day.
The eggs stick to the hair and are visible as little white specks. It is the eggs, rather than the lice, that we call nits. After eight days, the eggs hatch and each louse lives for five weeks or so, They piece the skin to feed on our blood. The bites look like little pinpricks and produce inflammation and itchiness which are the hallmark of a lice infestation.

Head Lice Remedy No. 1
To remove both eggs and lice, mix 2 drops of essential oil of basil, rosemary, peppermint, or lavender in a base of 1 tsp of olive oil and rub it into the scalp and hair at night. Leave the oil on the hair until the morning, and then wash it out thoroughly, (Put a towel over your pillow to prevent it becoming stained with the oil as you sleep.)
Head Lice Remedy No. 2
Mix together 4 ounces of olive oil, 20 drops basil oil, and 30 drops tea tree oil. Apply the mixture to the hair in the evening and comb out the lice with a nit comb. Wash the hair the following morning. Repeat the process for five consecutive days. If necessary apply the mixture again in five days’ time and repeat the cycle of applying, combing, and washing for another five days.
Flower scented shampoos can also help. Lice thrive on the human body, and anything that masks or alters the normal human smell will often make the lice leave. This is why lice don’t live on dogs and cats: These animals do not have the human smell. You can work this to your advantage though, by using shampoos which have a heavy flower or perfume scent to them. This often drives the lice out of the head, plus prevents them from staying when the eggs hatch too.
Another head lice home remedy is to alter the standard human smell by eating some fresh garlic or onions. Eating garlic or onions in large amounts, or over several days, will cause your body and sweat to have a different smell. This will drive the lice, nits, and a few people away as well.
