Essential Fatty Acids and Skin Health
I'm always attracted to health blogs that take the whole person into consideration. So when I came across the Total Wellbeing Blog, it was a no brainer. Joanne Mayhead blogs about the whole person--which of course includes natural skin care. She has this to offer about the benefits of essential fatty acids and skin care--
We tend to focus a lot on products that help our skin on the outside but why don’t you make it one of your goals in 2008 to improve your skin from the inside. No amount of beauty products can make a difference if we are unhealthy. The state of our health shows so much through our skin and if we are run down or low on nutrients, it will look dull, listless or inflamed.
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) can really help your skin. I swear by a good EFA supplement with Omega 3, 6 and 9. I am prone to problem skin and this supplement along with a good antioxidant keeps my skin in great condition! EFAs are particularly good if you have very dry skin or eczema. It can also help a lot if your skin problems are hormone related.
In addition to great skin, EFAs has so many other health benefits such as help for water retention, pre-menstrual tension, irritability, concentration and brainpower, lifting depression and cardiovascular health - so many health benefits from one source!
The danger nowadays is that so many people strive for a very low fat diet and end up deficient in these EFAs that are so crucial to our health. Natural food sources include walnuts, flaxseed and canola oil, fatty fish and fish oils, corn, safflower, soybean, cottonseed, primrose oil, sunflower oils, meat, poultry and eggs to name just a few . . .
It can be hard to get the right balance of EFAs which is why I personally choose to supplement. So as well as giving your general health a huge boost, try EFAs for natural beauty from the inside out.
