Olive oil is one of the oldest natural cosmetics on the planet. In ancient times, the Egyptians coated their skin with cosmetics made from olive oil. The ancient Greeks would smear it on their bodies before engaging in physical exercise. Numerous cultures have used olive oil to anoint the body during religious and official ceremonies. If you’re looking for a pure and natural way to moisturize your skin, extra virgin olive oil is a great way to go.

Nowadays there are so many creams and lotions available to moisturize the skin, it can be hard to make a choice. Of course, you want to avoid dyes and allergens so that narrows the field a little bit. However, there are many natural skin care products to apply to your dry skin. Another option people look for is a product with no animal fats. Organic extra virgin oil fits the bill on all counts.

Extra virgin olive oil is made from olives which are unripened. After being picked and washed thoroughly, they are pressed into a paste using a process called ‘cold pressing’. This method is wonderful because the oil is forced  out without using chemicals. Pure olive oil, rich with nutrients for healthy skin, is what remains when the process is complete.

Many people think olive oil is just for cooking or eating. While it does provide enormous benefit to the skin when consumed, it also makes a superior wash. To start off, olive oil provides a generous amount of the vitamin E which is also an antioxidant. Vitamin E is needed to retain healthy skin cells and is easily absorbed due to the monounsaturated fat from the olives. One of the very best ways to add vitamin E to a diet is by exchanging butter or margarine for olive oil.

Another benefit of olive oil is that it works well for both oily and dry skin. The ‘OCM’ or oil cleansing method, is one way that olive oil can be used to correct unbalanced skin. Often a person with excessively oily skin is dehydrated. Your skin is trying to compensate for dehydration by over-producing oil. In the case of dry skin, you may be dehydrated as well.

The nutrients in olive oil can correct either condition. Remember, it contains vitamin E which is an antioxidant as well as good fats to heal your skin. You’ve probably been taught to never put oil on your face, but ‘good oil’ can correct many skin conditions. Oil is so crucial for healthy skin that the body produces it every day, so adding oil to the skin is a fantastic way to aid the body in what it’s already doing.

Extra virgin olive oil can be be mixed with castor oil to produce the best cleansing oil. The mix should be less than thirty percent castor oil. An 80% mixture of extra virgin olive oil with 20% castor oil is the best blend. Larger quantities of castor oil can actually dry the skin. Apply the oil to the skin with a soft cloth in circular motions. Massaging the whole facial area with these oils removes all traces of makeup and debris. Follow up with a mild toner and your skin will feel renewed.

After this massage is completed, clean the wash cloth with hot water. Apply this hot cloth to the face to steam the pores open. This is just like a salon facial, without the price tag. The hot cloth will open your pores and release the remaining oil. Impurities and residue should wash gently away from the skin. Make sure that the cloth does not become too hot. When this steam process is finished, just pat the skin dry.

If your skin is dry, create a facial mask from two tablespoons of olive oil mixed with a tablespoon of honey. Beat one egg yolk into the oil and honey mixture. Apply this to your face after cleansing it. The mask should stay on the skin for about fifteen minutes. Rinse it off thoroughly with warm water and see the difference in your skin.

Olive oil penetrates the skin more easily than any other oil and contains vitamin E to repair damaged cells. Olive oil is so safe and natural — you’re only limited by your imagination as to using it in natural skin care recipes.
