The health of our skin—one of the body’s first lines of defense against illness and injury—depends upon the delicate balance between our own cells and the millions of bacteria and other one-celled microbes that live on its surface. To better understand this balance, National Institutes of Health researchers have set out to explore the skin’s microbiome, which is all of the DNA, or genomes, of all of the microbes that inhabit human skin. Their initial analysis, published recently in the journal Science, reveals that our skin is home to a much wider array of bacteria than previously thought.

If you saw the movie Cat Woman, you’ll remember the subplot was about a cosmetics company peddling a cream named Beauline that literally turned Sharon Stone’s face to stone. The cream worked miracles for a while, but in the end it made people sick and disfigured. People were dieing trying to be beautiful.

Many people have never heard the term endocrine disruptor, but just like the fictitious Beauline, endocrine disruptors will eventually make people sick and disfigured.

I guess the simplest definition of natural skin care is care of the skin using natural ingredients such as herbs, roots, and essential oils—things found in nature. No unpronounceable synthetics that turn out to be carcinogens or endocrine disruptors.
